DIY Tips To Prevent Dryer & Washing Machine Repairs

These are a few basic tips you can follow to prevent costly repairs to your washing machine or dryer.

  • Don’t Overload Your Washer or Dryer – It’s tempting to do all the laundry in one giant load, right? Please resist the temptation! Overloading a washing machine prevents the clothes from agitating correctly and getting truly clean. It will also put extra wear and tear on the appliance and may cause parts to give out sooner.Stuffing your dryer full makes it run much longer to dry your clothes.  And, similar to the washing machine, it will cause excess wear on components.
  • Clean the Lint Filter After EVERY Load – Even if you dried a small load and there is barely any lint in the filter, clean it after every load. A clogged lint screen restricts proper air flow and venting.  The machine will have to work harder to dry your clothes.  It also puts additional wear on other components.  For example, restricted air flow can cause overheating which will blow safety fuses designed to prevent fires. It’s also a good idea to periodically check your dryer duct (that vents to the outside) to make sure it is free of dryer lint.
  • Don’t Slam Doors & Lids – Soft closing lids on washing machines are a big help in this regard.  If your appliance does not have a soft closing lid, be careful not to let the lid slam closed.  The same is true of dryer doors. Closing doors and lids with excessive force can cause doors, latches and switches to break and need repair.  This is just a simple thing you can do to extend the life of your appliance.
  • Properly Level Washer & Dryer Units – Make sure to adjust the feet on both units so they are sitting level. If a washing machine is not sitting level it puts extra wear and tear on the suspension system (particularly during the spin cycle).  A clothes dryer that is not level will cause certain components like roller wheels or bearings to wear unevenly.  This will require more frequent repairs.
