Common Trash Compactor Problems You Can Fix Yourself

Here are a couple items you can check and possibly fix yourself before calling us for repairs. We’re here for you, but if these tips save you some money, we’re happy to help that way too!

  • Check your power supply – If the garbage compactor does not turn on, check power at the receptacle and test the electrical cord. Perhaps a blown fuse in your house is the cause of the problem. Also, make sure the drawer is closing completely.  A door that’s ajar will prevent the compactor from running.
  • Add lubrication – Check your owner’s manual for instructions on lubricating your model. Especially if you’re hearing unusually loud noises, your compactor may be in need of lubrication. Even if you’re not having problems right now, this step of lubrication is a good part of regular maintenance to extend the life of your trash compactor
  • Check for debris – If the compactor starts but doesn’t fully compact your trash, there may be something blocking it. Important: Remember to turn off power to your garbage compactor before exploring inside! If possible, use a stick or other long object to poke around instead of your arms and fingers.Look for any debris stuck inside that may be limiting movement.
  • Be careful what you compact – There are some things you should never put inside a trash compactor. These include:
    • Aerosol Cans
    • Anything flammable or explosive
    • Batteries
    • Excessive Liquids
