DIY Tips for Your Oven, Stove/Range & Cooktop
Keeping your stove and oven clean inside and out will help extend the life of your appliance. Here are a couple no-cost tips about what and how to clean. Following these bits of advice could save you repairs down the road.
- Clean Gas Stove / Range Burners – Gas stove burner assemblies can become clogged over time. If they clog, this may prevent the burner from lighting up or cause a low flame.
Periodically clean the burners with a brush (preferably stainless steel) to prevent any clogs. Something like a toothpick can also be helpful to poke through any clogged holes.
- Never Spray Chemicals Directly on the Oven or Stove – When cleaning any part of your electric or gas appliance, spray the cleaning solution on your cloth or sponge first. Then wipe down your surface with the wet cloth.
Spraying chemicals directly on your appliance can cause moisture to get where it shouldn’t. If moisture gets inside it can burn out any electrical components.
This is especially important when cleaning parts such as the knobs, switches, and touch pad controls.
To be safe, we recommend this cleaning method for all parts of any home appliance.
- Clean the inside of your oven – Although most people know they should clean the inside of their oven, we don’t know anyone who enjoys it!
Here is our recommended, simple method to clean your oven cavity.
For lightly soiled ovens:
- Place a baking pan filled with water and vinegar on your oven shelf.
- Run the oven until the liquid boils and covers the inside with a mist.
- Turn off the oven and let cool.
- Wipe off the mist from the oven cavity walls and inside of the door.
For caked on / heavily soiled ovens:
- Mix water with baking soda to form a paste.
- Rub the paste on the inside of the oven walls and let sit for a while.
- Spray the pasted walls with vinegar and let sit a bit longer (but long enough that it dries).
- Wipe paste & vinegar off the walls and inside of the door.
We do not recommend spray oven cleaners. They can cause your oven to break if the chemicals get into certain parts of your oven.
