DIY Preventative Maintenance for Your Refrigerator
Preventative maintenance on your appliance will help keep it running smoothly. Your owner’s manual may contain instructions specific to your make and model.
These are a few general tips that can be applied to all brands.
- Clean refrigerator coils – For safety measures, it’s best to unplug the unit before completing this step. (Just remember to plug it back in when you are done!) Dirty condenser coils will have a negative impact on the refrigerator or freezer performance and could cause other components to fail prematurely. You’ll find the condenser coils underneath the fridge for most newer models, and behind the unit on older models. You’ll have to remove the back cover or bottom kick-plate to access the coils. Use a brush and/or vacuum cleaner to remove any dust and debris.
Dust build up restricts airflow and can cause the compressor and fan to run much longer than necessary.
Clean the coils regularly to keep them free of dust build up. If you have pets that shed, you may need to do this more regularly.
- Clean door seals – Clean door seals to make them last longer. A build up of sticky food on door seals can make them harder to open and cause premature tearing of the seals. Food or debris can also prevent the doors from sealing properly. This causes the fridge to run longer and use more electricity. This can cause more wear and tear on other parts of your fridge or freezer.Clean door seals with warm water and a rag or sponge. Don’t use aggressive detergents as they can cause the seal to break down.
- Don’t Overload your Refrigerator or Freezer – Proper airflow is required to keep your food cool. Too much in your fridge or freezer may block vents, affecting airflow and causing the compressor and condenser fan to run much longer. When loading your appliance, pay special attention to vents in the back and make sure they are not blocked.
