DIY Maintenance for Your Microwave

Keeping these simple tips in mind can greatly lengthen the life of your microwave. I mean free is best right? 😂

  • Don’t Slam the Microwave Door – To keep repair calls to a minimum, it is best to pay attention to how you close the door. Gently push the door closed rather than slamming.  Slamming the door, over time, ruins the micro switches and door latch assemblies. When I was younger I remember my father telling us not to slam our microwave door, now I understand why.  Most of the repair calls we make for microwaves are due to problems with the micro switches! This one may be a hard habit to break.  You’re in a hurry, grab your food and slam the microwave door as you walk away.  But this small adjustment will save you repair costs down the road.
  • Clean or replace microwave grease filters – Many microwaves are mounted above the stovetop. When you cook with oils on the stovetop the microwave fan pulls oil into the bottom filter, often called the grease filter. Remember, it’s best to turn off the power to any appliance before you clean it! Oils can get into the microwave cavity and blow out the fuses.  It can also clog the filter and prevent good airflow for your microwave. If your microwave is above the stovetop, you’ll easily see the filter if you look under the microwave.  They are usually pretty easy to remove by gently pushing them up and tilting. Refer to your microwave user’s manual if you need direction on how to remove the filter.

Once you’ve removed it, place in soapy water to clean it.  Then thoroughly rinse with water and let dry.

With the filter removed you’ll be able to see inside the bottom of the microwave.  It’s good to clean this area inside with a damp rag and remove any oil or debris that’s been sucked inside.  Never use aerosol cleaners  or spray any solutions directly near this area. Overspray mist could ruin wiring or some electrical components in areas you cannot easily see.

If your filter is so dirty that your soap and water solution is not getting it clean you may need to replace it.  Search for your microwave model online and you’ll most likely find the filter you need to purchase.

If you can’t find your filter online, or would rather not do it yourself, give us a call and we can get one for you.

  • Clean microwave venting areas – Regardless of where your microwave is installed, most recirculate air through a carbon filter. Keeping the vents clean of oil and debris will help maintain proper airflow and preserve the life of your carbon filter. Look for air vents above and below your microwave.  Wipe them down with a damp cloth on a regular basis to remove dust, grease buildup and any other debris. Keeping your entire microwave clean, top to bottom, will encourage unrestricted air flow and keep your microwave running efficiently.
