Garbage Disposal Repair and Replacement Services

Garbage disposals are handy for eliminating food waste quickly.  They can even help the environment.  Rather than food rotting in landfills it ends up at a sewage treatment plant (unless you have a septic system). If the food waste ground in a disposal is treated at a plant like Rock River Water Reclamation District, the gas generated from the food waste is converted into biofuel to help power the plant. That’s environmentally friendly!

Prolong the Life of Your Garbage Disposal

These are a few things to keep in mind that will help your garbage disposal last longer and prevent avoidable repairs.

  1. Do NOT put these foods in your disposal – Although your garbage disposal can grind a lot, there are certain foods more likely to build up inside, bind the grinders, or clog your plumbing. Check your model’s manual for foods it can and can’t handle. Here are a few foods you should NOT put down your disposal:
  • Banana peels
  • Fibrous food like celery or cork husks
  • Thick bones or clam shells
  • Coffee grounds
  • Oil and grease
  • Egg shells
  • Starchy Foods
  1. Run plenty of cold water – Run cold water before you grind food waste and keep the water running after you turn off the disposal. Cold water helps prevent the motor from overheating.  And a steady stream of water ensures the ground waste is washed down the drain pipe rather than sitting in your disposal.
  1. Keep your garbage disposal odor free – Running water, as described above, will help control odors. You can also grind up ice cubes on a regular basis to help clean the inside of your disposal. If you notice a slight odor, grind citrus fruits, like lemons or oranges, to help neutralize the smell.

Please note: If you ever wipe the rubber splash guard attached to the opening or move it aside to look inside, make sure to unplug the unit first.

Don’t take any chances!
